Besides the working groups, the largest focus of student activity will be on a final project. Most final projects will be done in groups of 2 or 3 (though with permission of instructor students can substitute an individual paper), and project topics will be chosen according to student interest. (Students must consult with the instructor as to appropriateness of project size.) Here are some sample project topics:

Humanities students

• Deconstruct some aspect of the Internet or Multimedia landscape
• view papers from last year's class in Michigan

  Computing-intersted students

• Look at technologies for intellectual property protection and/or authentication. You could synthesize and expand upon the discussion that appears in the Proceedings of the 1994 CNI/Interactive Multimedia Association conference on Technological Strategies for Protecting Intellectual Property in the Networked Multimedia Environment. One of the many uses of these results would be for a museum association that is designing model licensing agreements for multimedia programs.
• Help the Berkeley Multimedia Research Center build a server for managing intellectual property for multimedia content
• Reorganize and/or create an index to all the WWW information produced by students in this class over the past several years.

  Journalism students

  Look at how technological changes are affecting traditional parts of the publishing industry. How are newspapers changing? How are bookstores changing? How does online delivery differ from delivery in print? Will online services skim off the most lucrative income for local and regional newspapers?

  Business students

• Help plan an evaluation of how, why, and when students use digital images (current instruments to examine the Museum Educational Site Licensing Project)
• Develop a plan to assess the costs associated with some aspect of using digital images (potentially as part of the the Instructor's Mellon Foundation Grant to examine the Museum Educational Site Licensing Project)
• Develop a business plan for an image delivery and intellectual property rights management clearinghouse
