MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (Dow Jones News) -- Sun Microsystems Inc. and Thomson Multimedia said Tuesday that Dutch pay television company Nethold will launch their Open TV interactive video system in Europe and South Africa later this year.

Nethold plans to offer viewers access to services such as home shopping, ticket ordering, interactive commercials, interactive game shows and electronic program guides.

Sun Microsystems and Paris-based Thomson Multimedia formed an alliance last year to develop interactive television systems.

Thomson Multimedia is a unit of electronics maker Thomson SA of Paris. Sun Microsystems supplies computer networks to the cable and telecommunications industries.
