Hello, and welcome to my Mosaic corner. This is more like a journey with me through my class LIS 296A-Multimedia and Networks as I learn and try to understand various social issues and policies associated with computer networks and CD-ROM technologies. I am not an expert of course, but I have looked closely at the increasing debate over commercialized networks. More specifically, my midterm paper dealt with comparing the services of Prodigy vs. the Internet. I find it difficult now using these commercial services, because there is always a feeling of control, lack of content, and as always ads! Another new technology I looked at were CD-ROMs. Their capacity for storage is so high, and the result can be a combination of education, learning, and recreation. My multimedia review of From Alice to Ocean , a CD-ROM documentary of one woman's journey through the Austrailian desert seems aptly enough to parallel me in some ways as I journeyed myself through this new technology.
I was also an active member of the Virtual Communities Focus Group where we met every week for class and meetings while also actively chatting, debating, discussing on our newsgroup. We all worked together well and had seemed to form a little community of our own.
For my final paper , I researched on how computer-mediated communications were changing the workplace in its discourse, interaction, and the physcial workplace itself. With all our technological advances, we seem to be approaching the Virtual Office, where time and space are no longer relative.
Thank you for letting me share with you my experiences and thoughts. I can't predict what the future will bring us, I can only hope that what we have now will only grow and expand for the better.
