Part I
Introduction and Background—
Distribution Cost Center Models

This background section offers a general framework for examining image distribution models: how they are related and how they can be evaluated. It establishes a theoretical frame that outlines a general cost for image delivery for MESL's heterogeneous institutions and across digital and analog distribution models. It identifies the general layers in the delivery process that appear to have similar and dissimilar functions and then defines the core elements in each layer. The section also outlines the data collection and data analysis methods of the UC Berkeley-Mellon project.
